Minion part 1

So my in addition to our crafty getaways, my scrappin' sisters like to plan other outings....
Dixon Scrapbook Store & Tea Party
Amtrack train ride to Berkley, CA to Scrapbook Territory
and the most recent....
The Minion Movie!
They say "Bring the family" and "The colors of the day are Denim blue & yellow"
So of course, I start planning in my head.....
Of course, we had months to plan.... sure I had Pinned a few ideas, but I was not finding what I envisioned..... I just didn't want to go out & buy 4 pairs of overalls for myself & the kids.....
So of course the brainstorming begins.

I originally was going to make the yellow smock & blue parts, but found these yellow t-shirts on sale at JoAnn Crafts - much simpler idea.
Here is all the supplies I purchased.... the Minion fabric just happened to be on an end cap & jumped off into my cart.

Here are my detailed sketches of measurements & the pattern for each of my kids.

And so it begins....
I cut my fronts & backs according to my pattern & then sewed a 1/2 inch yellow seam around each piece.
Then I found a pocket template & re-sized it for each of the outfits & sewed a 1/2 inch yellow outline on each of those.

I wanted to make sure it was going to work & needed to measure how long the straps were.
This is my son modeling his.

My youngest "being a Minion".

And my oldest, big helper!

And here is mine - my first one at least.
Now, even though I measured.... that doesn't mean that it worked....
Here was my big screw up....
There just was not enough allowance for my hips....
I was cruising through them until I hit this.... then I was laughing so hard at myself.

And I figured I didn't have much to lose, it was my last bit of fabric & there was no adding on to it without it being very noticeable....
Might as well see if I could even stretch it over myself....
Wallah!
I now have a Minion Mini skirt.

Now I just have a basic sewing machine... it has some fancy stitches, but for the most part just basic.
All I need as a beginner sewer.
A feature that I LOVE is the button hole feature....
Now look at that... the machine did all the work & I just cut up the middle to create the hole.
Poof! Done!

And it even will attach the buttons on too.... You just set it up where, flip a switch so the feed doesn't advance & do a zig zag stitch over the button.
Poof! Done!

This is the handy dandy button hole foot. What you can't see is you insert the button in the top, which is behind the needle & it recognizes the size of the button, so it knows how long to make the button hole.
So cool!
Why do I think this is cool? Because, these costumes would not have buttons on them if my machine didn't have this... no way, no how... but since it's so easy & the machine does it for you.
Poof! Buttons!

And the kids testing them out for me.... I had to tweak a few, shorten straps, etc...
but they work!

And after another trip to JoAnn Crafts for more fabric, here is my finished Minion costume...
Please note: I am a beginner in sewing and it is definitely not going to win any fashion awards for seamstress.... but it works.
I was able to sit comfortably and not rip any seams out... LOL!
Darn those wide hips!

And the finale photo.... check out my next blog post for the How To on the Minion hats.

Now we are ready to see the Minion Movie in costume!

Enjoy!
